How do armor sets work?

Four of your nine gear slots are armor. Pieces belonging to larger armor sets can be combined — matching equipment lets you “further specialise your build” in the developers’ words. Sets are the long-term counterpart to a run’s temporary Boons: where Nexus Gate picks vanish at the end of a hunt, a purified set is forever.

How do you unlock armor permanently?

By purifying it. The official loot explainer describes the loop directly: find powerful equipment during a hunt, purify it, and it is permanently added to your collection — available at the Loadout Station to equip before future hunts. Every successful run expands your arsenal; that is how a set goes from “dropped once” to “always available”.

What makes a good armor set choice?

Since sets specialize rather than simply upgrade, the right question is direction: a defensive set for learning bosses, an aggressive set once your combat fundamentals are solid. Synergy beats rarity — the developers are explicit that the strongest builds are about combinations, not the highest item level.

How do sets interact with the other slots?

Armor is one layer of the nine: your trinkets, one-handed weapon and shield, and two-handed weapon complete the loadout. The loot guide covers where all of it drops and how purification turns hunts into permanent progression.
