What Happens When You Die in Crimson Moon? Loss vs Kept Progress
Dying in a mission forfeits bonus rewards and some souls, but XP, levels, lore scrolls and gate-carried gear survive. The official loss rules.
What happens when you die?
Death is designed into the loop — “a constant companion,” in the official docs’ words. Each mission gives you limited lives, and the framing is lore-deep: with the Spire piercing Eden’s Veil, “you, Nephilim, are not as resilient as you once were.” When a mission finally kills you for good, the game settles your account by splitting everything you did into two columns. That final settlement screen has an official name — the Hotfix 1.0.1 patch notes call it the True Death results screen.
What do you lose?
| Lost on death | Detail |
|---|---|
| Bonus XP | Completion-bonus experience is not awarded |
| Certain souls | A portion of souls collected from kills is lost |
| Bonus souls | The completion-bonus souls are forfeited |
| Unguarded loot | Equipment not taken through a Nexus Gate or to the mission end is lost |
| Acquired consumables | Everything found mid-mission (starting consumables are exempt) |
What do you keep?
| Kept after death | Detail |
|---|---|
| XP and levels | XP applies live during the mission; a level-up mid-run stays unlocked, with everything it granted |
| A share of souls | You keep a certain number of souls — the loss is a portion, not the whole |
| Gate-carried gear | Equipment acquired or stored through a Nexus Gate is retained — “in a weaker, purified form” |
| Lore scrolls | Scrolls are permanent additions and can be presented to Mereda at the hub |
How do Nexus Gates protect your loot?
Nexus Gates are the living doorways that seal each area of a district — you open them by meeting a condition such as defeating all enemies in the area, and each gate passed offers a choice of three Boons. For the system itself, see Nexus Gates in the builds guide. In death terms, a gate is the checkpoint that converts fragile run-loot into retained (if weaker) gear.
What about lore scrolls?
Scrolls bypass death entirely: collecting one adds it permanently to your collection, and you “may present them to Mereda when you return to the hub” — her scroll-for-Boons loop is covered in the Sanctus Clypeus guide. Death never costs you lore.
Should you fear death?
No — the run loop is built to absorb it. Missions can be replayed at the same or higher difficulty, districts stay accessible after completion, and even a failed hunt banks XP, levels, a soul share and every scroll you grabbed. How that feeds the next deployment is the wider story in how runs work, and what survives permanently beyond runs is the armory’s business.
